Bronze Ballerina with broken foot

 

This project was a five foot, two inch, outdoor, dancing ballerina that was was snapped off at the foot while being removed from an anchored position. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                 The above pictures show the typical thickness of a bronze casting, which is about 3/16th of an inch thick.  You can
                 see an existing bar that extended from below the heel, up to the ankle, near the area of breakage.  Below you can
                 see the entire sculpture as it was being unpacked.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


                  I determined that the area of the break needed to
                  be reinforced internally so I removed the existing
                  bar and inserted a stainless steel 1 1/2 inch rod that
                  extended  about 24 inches up into the leg.  I secured
                  the rod with gypsum-based cement.  The picture to
                  the right shows the repair nearing completion after
                  being welded and chased.
