FAQ's
Q.
When should you start the
preservation treatment?
A.
The best time to start preserving a plaque or
memorial is
when it is first installed. It will be in the best condition
of
its life, fresh from the foundry. Applying UV protection at
this time will ensure that the finish will be protected
before
sun has had a chance to do any damage. The next best
time
to start preserving a plaque or memorial is when you notice
that it hasn't had proper care.
Q. Can this preservation treatment cause damage?
A.
Our preservation procedure outlined above does not pose any risk to
plaques or memorials. All operations are performed by hand with cleaning
agents that are mild & biodegradable. If necessary, the wax can be
removed with no damage to the metal or clear-coated finish.
Q.
Are these restoration steps in line with established guidelines?
The above procedures are
in line with the material
presented in Metals in America's Historic Building
(U.S. Department of
Interior, National Park Service, 1980, Pg. 125-127 "Copper & Copper Alloys;
Preservation & Repair"). Although the American Institute for Conservation of
Historic and Artistic Works does not have specific guidelines for bronze
memorials, this process follows their "Code of Ethics."
